Democracy is in flux worldwide, some countries facing erosion and authoritarian consolidation, others showing renewed democratic resilience or growth. This roundtable brings together comparative perspectives on how to understand, measure, and explain these shifting trajectories.
The discussion examines competing approaches to assessing democracy and autocratization, including the challenges of capturing gradual institutional change, legal transformations, informal power dynamics, and democratic resilience, alongside the political, social, and economic drivers shaping these trends, and their implications for governance, rights, and global order amid rising polarization and geopolitical uncertainty.
