PRO BONO AND LEGAL ALLYSHIP FOR ACTIVISTS IN SHRINKING CIVIC SPACE

The session examines how pro bono legal services and other forms of legal allyship give activists expertise, resources, legitimacy, and protection to defend rights and challenge repression. As civic space keeps shrinking, ties with lawyers and institutional actors are becoming more essential.
However, this allyship raises tough questions about professionalism, power, accountability, and risk. The panel will address:
- How activists can engage institutional allies while preserving autonomy and accountability
- When pro bono support strengthens movements versus when it risks reshaping their agendas or reinforcing inequalities
- What responsibilities come with claiming to be an "ally"
It will also explore how legal actors navigate the tension between solidarity, professionalism, and power, and how activists experience these dynamics.
Participants: Adrian Jjuuko (Makerere University), Nina Reimers (University of Oslo), and one speaker TBC.
