What does it actually take to farm food in a dense city? And how can Torontonians participate — even if they don't have much space or gardening experience? 🌱🥕
The Green Line is hosting Farming Food in Toronto: Documentary Screening and Vermicomposting Demonstration on Tuesday, Aug. 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Carrot Green Roof (348 Danforth Ave.).
We’ll begin the evening with a screening of The Green Line’s new documentary about the residents, farmers and community organizations growing food across Toronto. The film visits urban farms and community gardens in Flemingdon Park and Thorncliffe Park, where residents are transforming hydro corridors, apartment grounds and other underused spaces into places to grow, harvest and share fresh, culturally relevant food.
Through the experiences of local growers, the documentary explores whether Toronto could produce more of its own food and how urban agriculture can address food insecurity, supplement household grocery budgets and create opportunities for employment and community connection. It also looks at the environmental and health benefits of growing food closer to home — from shortening supply chains and reducing emissions to improving biodiversity, mental health and access to fresh produce.
Afterward, the lovely staff at Carrot Green Roof will give a vermicomposting demonstration, and we’ll learn how worms can transform everyday food scraps into nutrient-rich compost.
Whether you’re an experienced gardener, curious about sustainable living or just looking to connect with your community, you’ll leave with insights about how Toronto’s local food system works, the role urban farming can play in creating a more sustainable city, and practical ways to reduce food waste and start composting at home.
