In the Kitchen with Chef Izzeldin Bukhari

A cross-cultural conversation about Palestinian cooking, farming, and diasporic cuisine, between renowned Palestinian chef Izzeldin Bukhari of @sacredcuisine and fellow food advocate and educator @chefbashir. Moderated by author Catherine Hernandez.

Ahead of his supper club events, community gatherings and fundraising events in Toronto, chef Izzeldin stops by Another Story Bookshop to share recipes and stories behind beloved favourites like rummaniyeh and baba ghanoush, of the Palestinian connection to the land, of plant life and farming practices common across Palestine and Turtle Island, and to read from his contributions to the anthology “Daybreak in Gaza” and @amnesty International’s upcoming online cookbook “Recipes of Resilience: Flavours of Palestine.”
This event will include light refreshments and a sampling of savoury and sweet dishes to welcome you to chef Izzeldin's home away from home.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Jerusalem-based Palestinian chef Izzeldin Bukhari is on a mission to preserve and celebrate Palestine’s culinary heritage, with a special focus on somi, a longstanding vegetarian food tradition.
A true global child, Chef Bashir’s experience of food embraces many geographical and cultural boundaries. He is proudly born in Mogadishu, and raised in Italy, travelled across Europe and moved on to the U.S. before coming to Toronto. Serving as a Culinary Professor at George Brown College, teaching The Sustainable Chef and Slow Food programs, he connects with local farming and artisan food business communities and imparts his connection with terroir and the community.This event will include light refreshments and a sampling of savoury and sweet dishes to welcome you to chef Izzeldin's home away from home.Interested in attending one of his hosted meals in Toronto and beyond? Catherine Hernandez (she/her) is an award-winning author, screenwriter and artist who wrote the acclaimed novel and award-winning film adaptation, Scarborough. Her other novels include Crosshairs, The Story of Us, and Behind You. She is working on several TV projects, including showrunning CBC Gem/Apartment 11/Avenida Productions’ The Unstoppable Jenny Garcia, which earned her a Canadian Screen Award for Best Writing, Children/Youth. Most recently, Catherine has become a Grief and Death Doula, using storytelling to document the world's collective grief from climate change to burnout. This amalgamation of her writing, illustration and Doula work will culminate in the creation of illustrated obituaries, memorializing the dearly departed through an upcoming comics anthology.
