Join us for a night with the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery Gardeners-in-Residence at the Toronto Plant Market!
As KWAG’s 2026 Gardeners-in-Residence, sophia bartholomew and Shalaka Jadhav take inspiration from sophia’s grandmother’s community’s practice of eating and socializing in the garden, showing off and sharing in its spoils, and Shalaka's memories of their grandfather pointing out how the garden changed season over season when they visited their hometown in India.
Their residency project reclaims the garden as space for sharing knowledge and food, and reasserts the central importance of community and relationships when addressing issues of ecological sustainability and food security.
on Thursday, August 6th, visitors are invited to come, hang out, swap stories, ask questions, and share what they know about growing and preserving food. sophia and Shalaka will provide drinks and snacks, and a short text to read aloud together. Hard copies of the reading will be distributed at the event.
This garden visit will be free and open to the public.
As always we are hoping it will be a welcoming space for seasoned gardeners and curious newcomers. Guests will enjoy non-alcoholic botanical beverages, light snacks, and the opportunity to connect with others interested in plants, ecology, and local sustainability efforts.
Special Features:
- Arrival and snacks: Join us at 6:00 for some snacks and drinks
- Reading: sophia and Shalaka will be leading us in a group reading and discussion from 6:30 PM onwards, and share a bit about their journey with gardening.
- Talking native plants with TPM staff: Before and after the session, Parker and Julia and Jonas would love to answer your questions about climate-focused landscaping, creating garden spaces designed to support native plants and pollinators, and helping identify which native plants will grow in the conditions of your growing spaces.
- Community Building: We are excited to be connected with folks doing this work across southern Ontario and within Toronto!
