About this Event
Garden@Kimbourne is a community garden that uses permaculture principles to grow food and community in Toronto’s east end.
Our community gardening program Garden Together runs on Wednesdays from 6-8pm and Sundays from 12-2:30.
Every Sunday at 2PM from July 19-August 23 we will be hosting Teachables 30-40 min Permaculture mini-workshops.
Folks are more than welcome to drop in to our community garden sessions to explore our growing space and/or get hands-on with some gardening before Teachables begin at 2PM!

July 19: Governance Models for Community Gardens as Social Ecosystems
Info: Rafael Pascual-Leone of Oakcrest Orchard, a community stewardship initiative at 25 Oakcrest Avenue will be leading this workshop and inviting folks to consider the the power of community gardens as complex socio-ecological systems. Oakcrest Orchard is a community project that is transforming a long-neglected piece of land into a place of connection, care, and ecological renewal.

Info: Companion planting is a gardening technique that has been used for ages with deep roots in tradition and intergenerational knowledge. This workshop will explore the benefits of companion planting as a sustainable gardening/farming method for pest control, improving plant growth, etc!
Natural Dye & Weaving

August 2: Natural Dye & Weaving
Info: Natural dyes can be made from plants, roots, and even bark. This workshop will explore common plants and fruits that can transformed into natural dyes like mulberry, stinging nettle, orange day-lily, etc . This workshop will include a hands-on introduction to weaving with yarn that has been naturally dyed with plants from Garden@Kimbourne.
Using Rainwater

August 9: Using Rainwater
Info: Natural ecosystems capture and store energy in sophisticated and interconnected ways. Permaculture principle #2 Catch and Store Energy is all about capturing, storing and using local resources in your space to grow food. Rain barrels are a great example of this principle in action. This workshop on rainwater will touch on the logistics and benefits of creating a rainwater collection system for a growing space.
Paper-making with DSV

August 16: Paper-making with Dog-Strangling Vine (DSV)
Info: Dog-Strangling Vine (DSV) has become an increasing ecosystem threat in central and southern Ontario. This workshop will examine DSV identification, threats, and removal. Workshop participants will be invited to learn about how to make paper with DSV and get to make and take home their very own homemade DSV paper.
Introduction to Grafting

August 23: Introduction to Grafting
Info: Grafting is a horticulture technique that joins two plants into one! This workshop will touch on grafting theory, terminology, and finally application. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to graft some tomato plants using razor blades and grafting clips.
