Founded in 1969, the United Calgary Chinese Association (UCCA) cemented their claims to being the representative organization of Chinatown and of all Chinese Calgarians in the 1980s, under the charismatic, dynamic leadership of presidents Doug Tims and Joe Khu. Katie Qin shares how the UCCA championed culture, community, and a localized sense of belonging. By leading events ranging from Chinese New Year galas at the Jubilee to protests at City Hall calling for affordable housing, the work of Tims and Khu’s UCCA still resonates in Chinatown today.
