“An oil well is a hole in the ground surrounded by lawsuits.” Lawyers have always been heavily involved in Alberta’s oil industry, from billion-dollar litigation to drafting complex deals and contracts.  But lawyers also went into the business themselves, sometimes with great success. Hear David Mittelstadt tell the story of several of Calgary’s lawyer-businessmen, from one of Alberta’s greatest philanthropists to the lawyer who went from writing oil and gas law textbooks to writing thrillers set in the province’s oil patch.
