Monuments of Happenstance
About this Event
Statues of two victorious military leaders of the past were gifted to Calgary in the 1960s by philanthropist Eric Harvie. The Scottish king Robert the Bruce stands in front of the Jubilee Auditorium, while the English General James Wolfe stands in a park in Mount Royal. Join Ben Fullalove, retired Assistant Professor of Art History, Alberta University of the Arts, for this intriguing presentation pondering the curious and complex circumstances surrounding these statues. Why did Eric Harvie choose these statues as gifts? What effect might they have had on Calgary’s rapidly changing cultural landscape?
