Tree Survival Skills Through the Seasons

How do trees survive in winter? Why do their leaves turn colors and fall? Why do trees have different kinds of bark? Learn about New England's native trees and the clever ways they survive through our changing seasons. UNH Dendrologist Eileen Willard will lead a walk through Bedrock Gardens and teach you how to identify common deciduous and evergreen trees by leaves, bark, and branching. Savor some fall foliage as you discover the many ways trees acclimate from late summer into winter, and more. Participants will leave with written handouts, and further reading materials.

About the Teacher
Eileen Willard is a Wells Reserve docent, naturalist and nature writer who spent 15 years as a University of New Hampshire lab instructor in Dendrology (the study of trees) and in 2022 completed her Maine Master Naturalist certification. She is the the weekend attendant at the Wells Reserve Visitor Center and also helps to monitor marine invasive species as part of the MIMIC program.
Tickets are $20 for nonmembers and $15 for members, and include a full day pass to Bedrock Gardens. This class is intended for adults and older teens. If not requested within 48 hours of the program start time, tickets will not be reimbursed. Class is limited to 20 people.
