Textiles Summer School 2026 – Winchester School of Art

At our free Winchester School of Art Textiles Summer School, we will be exploring how storytelling, culture and personal identity can be displayed through fabric.

During our sessions we will learn the ways different textiles are culturally significant, and how pattern and motif act as visual storytelling. Initially we will look into different fabrics such as batik, tartan, kasuri and lace, as well as artists like Yinko Shonibare. We will identify motifs that are personally important to us, and how they might translate into a textile design work. Once we have investigated the context and have patterns in mind, we will begin to explore this practically using methods like collage to develop repeating patterns, batik, and block printing onto fabric. These can then be developed into simple textile pieces, such as small cushions, wall hangings, or pennants.

Students who are interested in fashion design, textile art, sustainability, and creative culture will benefit most from this course.

At the end of the sessions, you will have explored the methods, and associated artists, as well as experiencing university materials and teaching styles. These courses are additionally developed with all learners in mind, employing inclusive techniques allowing those who may find school difficult to experiment and explore in a comfortable environment. The samples made and development created on this course is prefect for college or university application portfolios, or just as a fun way to explore creativity during the summer holidays! Students do not need any previous experience for this course.
