About this Event
Game Design Summer School 2026 – Winchester School of Art
CREATING TABLETOP ROLE PLAYING GAMES (TTRPGs)
Age group: 13 - 18
Duration: 2 day
Dates: 3rd & 4th August
Times: 10:30 – 15:30
At our free Winchester School of Art Games Design Summer School, we will be exploring the development of solo or co-op tabletop role playing (ttrpgs) and journalling games. You will learn how exactly what this is, as well as creating your own simple version to take away and play!
Please note that we will not be learning digital based skills. It is intended to explore analogue game development through other means such as illustration, story telling, and tabletop mechanics (dice, cards, coins, etc).
During our sessions we will explore different games concepts such as core gameplay loops, prototyping, play testing, randomness, the psychology of solo games and gamification. We will begin by exploring these base concepts, playing and analysing preexisting solo/co-op games of this nature. Examples of this include A Mending, Dialect, Artifact, Cartograph, and Transformation. These games are similar to Dungeons and Dragons (DnD), in the sense they focus on storytelling, and physical elements, but they don’t require a dungeon master! Once we have explored these inspirations we will begin developing our own games, either independently or collaboratively. Students can pick from a series of pre-existing prompts, or select their own game theme. Elements for their games could include maquettes of game pieces, guidebooks/illustrations, cards, stickers, and planning desired outcome examples. Finally, we will finish by share games (for those who want to), and playtest the plans of others in a mini game jam!
Students who are interested in games design, board and table top games, illustration, storytelling, will benefit most from this course.
At the end of the sessions, you will have explored the methods, and associated artists, as well as experiencing university materials and teaching styles. These courses are additionally developed with all learners in mind, employing inclusive techniques allowing those who may find school difficult to experiment and explore in a comfortable environment. The samples made and development created on this course is prefect for college or university application portfolios, or just as a fun way to explore creativity during the summer holidays! Students do not need any previous experience for this course.
We will also be running a series of other sessions over the summer, do take a look at our Eventbrite page to find out more about our: Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Games Design, Fashion, and Textiles courses.
