Host: Jessica Purcell

Info: What really happens to our food scraps after we throw them away?

In this hands-on science lab, students become “dirt detectives” as they explore the fascinating world of decomposition! From testing mysterious packing peanuts to observing live red wiggler worms in action, students will discover how nature recycles waste into nutrient-rich soil.

Kids will build their own mini compost ecosystem (soilarium) to take home, plant a seedling in a compostable pot, and learn simple ways they can reduce food waste right at home. Along the way, we’ll sort real-life items, play Composting Bingo, and uncover the difference between backyard and industrial composting.

Perfect for curious kids who love getting their hands a little dirty!

Students Will Take Home:
A mini compost Soilarium + experiment packet
A planted seedling in a compostable pot
Composting checklist + activities
