Class Overview:

Do you have a teen or young adult with Special Needs that is interested in art? Are you concerned that a “traditional” art class will not be a good fit for them? This class is for you! I have taught art for 26 years. For 9 years, I taught art at a CAIU school for students with special needs. I have taught students with Downs Syndrome, ADHD, Autism, Intellectual Disabilities and Trauma. I have discovered that pre-planning, adaptation, and being able to think outside the box help contribute to successfully teaching this amazing population. In this 3 hour class, I will introduce your child to numerous types of art materials and techniques. The class will be limited to 6, to maintain focus on the student and their individual needs. Students will get lots of hands-on experience using various art supplies, while learning basic art techniques. If your child requires “hand over hand” assistance, please attend the class with them. There will also be a “Create Station”, for any child that needs a break from structure and instruction. At the Create Station, they will be able to “play” with art supplies and create whatever they wish. Disclaimer… students will get messy. Please have them wear old clothes.

  • Canvas Painting Landscape: Students will learn about the various elements of a landscape, and how to paint them. This includes a sky, land formations, water formations, and details.
  • Oil Pastel Butterfly: Create a mixed media piece, using watercolor to paint the background. Students will use tissue paper to “paint” a flower, and oil pastels to draw a butterfly. Students will use an eraser to blend the oil pastels.
  • Sharpie and Watercolor Flowers: Create a mixed media piece, using layered tissue paper for the ground , and watercolor for the sky. Students will use a sharpie marker to draw their flowers and use watercolor to color them in.
  • If time permits…Cardboard Critter: Students will make an animal sculpture from cardboard. They will have the option of adding embellishments to it, including yarn, googly eyes, feathers, and such.
  • Create Station: this is an area that has lots of art “stuff”. It is available for anyone who needs a break and wants to just create, with no direction or instruction. Materials include paper, puff balls, tissue paper, feathers, sequins, glue, yarn, and ribbon.

Tanya Haller Artist Bio:

I have taught all levels of art for 25 years, in a variety of school settings. I have taught Native American children in South Dakota, public and private school children in grades K-12, and children at the IU. I have my Masters in Art Ed and have experience teaching both children and adults with special needs. I also have experience with teaching “Paint nights”, private art instruction, and kids Christmas and summer art camps. I love creating things and thinking “outside the box”. When I teach a class, whether it be in the standard classroom, a paint night, or a child’s birthday party, I have the same approach…. Teach how to do the technique and then let the students/participants use the technique to create their own unique project.
