An immersive day in the woods weaving a beautiful platter basket. English rush is a native wild plant with a long history in basket making, and it makes a special partnership with wild rose.
These tactile platters are perfect for bread or fruit. English rush is a lovely material to work with, mellowing from green to a beautiful golden colour.
What you’ll learn
On the day we’ll harvest wild rose on site, learning how and when to do this in a sustainable way.
Ruby will introduce how to make this into the frame (and ribs) for your baskets.
We’ll discuss the habitat, harvest and processing of rush (Schoenoplectus lacustris). You’ll learn how to weave with the rush, including the joining-in method.
You’ll also learn how to place and shape the ribs to create a basket that sits evenly. This will involve knife skills.
