Doors open at 6pm and the screening starts promptly at 6:15pm

This screening highlights films and videos that have been digitized through BAVC Media's Playback Lab and Preservation Department, or filmed on magnetic tape (VHS, Mini DV, Betacam, Hi8, etc.), whether that's from your personal archives, home movies, or other creative projects.

Kick back after the screening for the happy hour and connect with other creatives to collaborate, network, discuss, and inspire one another.

The Member Montage: Community Screening & Mixer is an event series for Bay Area filmmakers. Creating a judgment-free space to share and workshop short films, music videos, passion projects, or works in progress with the BAVC Media community.

Program

From Scratch by Zander Constien: A work-in-progress personal narrative that travels through old and new home movies as Zander reflects on his relationship with food and family.

Here, Queer, and On TV by Cassandra Herrman & Kelly Whalen: A short documentary about the legacy of the 90s public access TV show, Lavender Lounge and the creator Mark Kliem bringing the rare footage to light in modern day.

HOW TO//CANCEL CYANOS by Alex Mejia: An educational film that turns a cyanotype workshop into a debate between iron salts and stolen ferns—unraveling Anna Atkins's legacy to expose the enslaved labor and erased Black naturalist behind the first photobook.

Love is the Drug by Liz Roberts: A short documentary exploring Heather Edney’s work as co-founder of the first needle exchange program in the US, right down the coast in Santa Cruz.

Who can attend?

Anyone! This is a free and open event to watch some cool stuff and meet fellow artists, creatives, and filmmakers in the Bay Area. You can choose to give a voluntary donation if you have the means, but we want this event to be accessible to everyone. However, this is not a child friendly program.

How can I submit my work to be shown at the next Member Montage?

If you are a BAVC Media Member, you can submit your work here for consideration! Please do not bring in physical media. Follow us on Instagram and sign up to our newsletter for updates.

What kind of projects are you looking for?

We're going back to our roots to spotlight media shot on magnetic tape (VHS, Mini DV, Betacam, Hi8). If you've digitized anything with our Preservation department or in our Playback Lab, please share! The content can be anything you want to share, whether it's a short film, collection from your home movies, work-in-progress, scene from a longer project, music video, or experimental proof-of-concept. All submissions must be under 10 minutes long. This will be a safe space where you can showcase your work, ask for feedback, or simply contribute your art in a casual setting.

If you have any access or support requirements in order to participate fully, please email us at [email protected]. The venue is accessible for people using wheelchairs and other mobility aids. There are two accessible gender neutral restrooms. All the films screened will have closed captioning.

With recent spikes in COVID-19 in the Bay Area, we advise all attendees to be considerate of others and stay home if they are feeling ill. If a participant or staff member has begun showing symptoms of COVID-19 (either through the screening or as observed by staff), they will be asked to not participate in in-person programming until they either test negative for COVID-19 or if they are symptom free for 10 days. While masks will not be mandatory we recommend wearing one inside the screening room and will have masks available at the event.

What Is BAVC Preservation?

Since 1994, BAVC Media has collaborated with artists, filmmakers, historical organizations, museums and universities to preserve thousands of hours of video and audio.

As audio and video technologies have changed, and as old formats age and disintegrate, we are at risk of losing significant media that documents the art, culture and history of our diverse communities. BAVC Media works to preserve and digitize these cultural artifacts and other precious works of media art.
