A simple plain English visual guide to the technology, and why understanding it improves your results.
About this Event

This course would suit people who are just getting started with AI and want to avoid the common trappings and pitfalls that can sometimes arise when using it. It is also suitable for those who already have some experience with AI tools but are unsure why they behave the way they do, or who find it difficult to judge whether the results they receive are reliable or useful.

It would be particularly helpful for anyone who wants a better mental model of AI without needing technical or mathematical depth. It is also aimed at people who feel frustrated by confident-sounding wrong answers or inconsistent behaviour and want clearer ways to understand what is happening.

No technical background is required for this course. Some experience of using AI chatbots would be helpful, as it can provide useful context for the examples, although this is not essential.

You will learn common AI terminology to support clearer conversations and understanding, alongside a simplified explanation of how modern AI chatbots are trained and how they generate responses. The course will also explore deterministic and probabilistic outputs, and why this distinction matters when deciding whether AI is appropriate for a particular task.

You will develop an understanding of the difference between an AI model and a user interface, and why that distinction is important. The course will also look at adaptive AI and generative AI, how AI is built to try to mimic aspects of human thinking, and why AI will never be human at a technical level.

Finally, you will consider how context windows and training data shape AI behaviour, as well as common failure modes such as hallucinations, inaccuracy, drift, over-confidence and poor replication, including why these issues occur.

The course will run on Monday 14 September 2026 at Stowmarket Innovation Gateway, Gateway 14, Stowmarket.
