Learn to program FTC mecanum drive robots for precise omnidirectional movement, navigation, and competition challenges.
About this Event

FTC Mecanum Drive Programming
Ages 12–18

In FTC Mecanum Drive Programming, students dive deeper into robotics software development by learning how to program robots equipped with mecanum wheels, a specialized drive system that allows movement in multiple directions without turning. Used by many FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC) teams, mecanum drive systems provide greater maneuverability and precision for navigating competition fields and completing game challenges.

Students will learn how software controls robot movement through motor programming, coordinate systems, and driver controls. Through hands-on coding activities and robotics challenges, participants will program robots to move forward, backward, sideways, diagonally, and rotate with precision. They will also explore how engineering and programming work together to create smooth and responsive robot movement.

Throughout the workshop, students will strengthen their coding skills while gaining practical experience with robot control systems, troubleshooting, testing, and performance optimization.

What Students Will Learn

  • Introduction to mecanum wheel drive systems
  • Understanding omnidirectional robot movement
  • FTC robot hardware and motor configuration
  • Programming robot movement using Java
  • Driver-controlled robot navigation
  • Coordinate systems and directional control
  • Power management and movement efficiency
  • Testing, debugging, and troubleshooting code
  • Engineering design and performance optimization
  • Problem-solving through robotics challenges
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills

Final Project
Students will program an FTC robot with mecanum wheels to complete a navigation challenge that demonstrates precise movement, directional control, and advanced robot driving capabilities.
