Build & Fly: Aerodynamics Lab
About this Event
Build & Fly: Aerodynamics Lab
Ages 6–12
In Build & Fly: Aerodynamics Lab, students become aerospace engineers and inventors as they explore the science of flight through hands-on building and flying activities. Participants will discover how birds, airplanes, helicopters, rockets, and gliders stay in the air while learning the fundamental principles of aerodynamics.
Through exciting engineering challenges, students will design, build, test, and improve a variety of flying creations, including paper airplanes, straw helicopters, balloon rockets, parachutes, and gliders. As they experiment with different designs, they will learn about lift, drag, thrust, gravity, stability, and control while developing creativity, problem-solving skills, and engineering thinking.
Each activity encourages students to think like engineers by testing ideas, making improvements, and discovering how small design changes can affect flight performance.
What Students Will Learn
- Introduction to aerodynamics and flight
- How birds, airplanes, and helicopters fly
- Lift, drag, thrust, and gravity
- Engineering design and testing
- Building and improving flying models
- Stability, balance, and control
- Problem-solving and creative design
- Scientific observation and experimentation
Final Project
Students will design, build, and test their own flying creation, applying the aerodynamics concepts learned throughout the workshop and presenting their design process and flight results.
