Bringing together emerging scholars to discuss conceps of refuge in the history of political thought
About this Event

The 2026 Cambridge Graduate Students’ Conference will provide a space for reflections on a basic human impulse: the desire for refuge. Political communities have their origins in our need for shelter. But what if a place of refuge turns out to be just as unsafe as the place we have left behind?

Ethos

The Cambridge Political Thought and Intellectual History Graduate Conference is the original, and remains one of the world’s leading, conferences featuring graduate research in the history of ideas. Regularly drawing graduate researchers from across the world, the Conference prides itself on the diversity of approaches to the discipline that it showcases. The Conference is always well-attended by leading Faculty in the discipline who engage with the ideas presented and, through floor discussions, help emerging researchers identify the strengths and opportunities in their research.

The Papers and Panels

The papers accepted by the Conference are of the highest quality, featuring exciting new investigations of a broad range of ideas from across time and space. Though each conference has a central theme, panels are curated to allow a diversity of historical narratives to be presented.

Featuring a number of curated panels, each chaired by a co-convenor, each graduate panellist will present a 20-minute paper. The presentations will be followed by 30 minutes of questions from the floor.

Networking

The event is a great opportunity not only to learn about what others are doing in the field, but to put names to faces and begin making professional connections at an early stage in your career. Naturally interdisciplinary, the political thought and intellectual history research group within which the Conference sits always attracts graduates and Faculty from a broad range of departments and research centres at the University. Funders are increasingly favouring applications that bring scholars together from different institutions or disciplines, which makes this Conference a brilliant opportunity to begin making contacts in the field.
