About this Event

Join Matei Candea on Tuesday 23rd June to celebrate the launch of his new Pelican book, Reason, Carnival, and Honour: An Anthropology of Free Speech.

Matei will be casting an anthropologist's eye over the hotly contested topic of free speech. Encouraging a move away from the polarised debates we see blaring on the news and dividing families, he presents a new trifold vision of free speech - Reason, or civil rational debate; Carnival, or the right to be outrageous; and Honour, the duty to stand by one’s word. Taking us through time and across the world, Candea dwells upon what language is doing in each of these three frameworks, what it means to be free, and what we are really arguing about when we argue about free speech.
