If the Grateful Dead is your religion, then the Crazy Horse is your church when Third Thursday rolls around. Every month Jonny Mojo (Achilles Wheel), Gary Campus (Deadbeats) and Tim High (Tim High & the Mighty) host a cast of the finest musicians from around the region to conjure lightning in a bottle. BBD is a gathering point for everyone who wants to plug into the feeling of what it was like soaking in the otherworldly sounds at a Dead show while sharing the dance muse with the tribe. The music that bubbles forth from these nights captures the spontaneous, primal, orgasmic spirit that so many of us crave.
Jonny is a proverbial pied-piper who guides the flock to the promised land with his incredibly versatile guitar playing and passion for the music coursing through his veins. He is one of the brightest lights among Nor Cal GD guitar specialists. He lives and breathes this music like a fish swimming in the sea. Gary emanates pure joy in every beat and gracefully molds his style to elevate the strengths of his collaborators. He’s been a rhythmic instigator in the region for 45 years now and is more fired up than ever. Nothing makes Tim happier than singing Grateful Dead songs as is evident by his assertive and heartfelt renditions of the classics as well as obscurities.
The special guests this month are headlined by one of the most innovative guitarists to ever grace the BBD stage. Brian Curtin (Love Mischief) has a Berklee School of Music pedigree and it shows with his mindbending approach to everything he does. His technical abilities on his instrument are off the charts. He matches that with a cerebral soulfulness and psychedelic panache. He and Jonny will challenge each other around every curve until their inevitable ascension into the cosmos.
Brian’s Love Mischief bandmate, Neil Heaton, heard what was happening and didn’t want to be left out of the fun. Neil is a keyboard dynamo who will be sprinkling mystical pixie dust on every single moment with his masterful ivory tickling.
Rounding out the group on bass is one of our favorite musicians and people, Justin Purtill. He also boasts a Berklee background, not that this ego-free cat ever would. Between he and Curtin, we’re dealing with a pair of major brainiac musical magicians. Justin is so funky and groovy and makes everything he does look effortless. His knowledge of the Dead catalog and how to reinterpret it in the freshest fashion is well seasoned from his extensive collaborations with Stu Allen. When he’s not playing Dead, he’s either touring the world with superstar Latin band, Residente, or producing his own solo, heartfelt, original material.
