About this Event
An exploration of local Earth Heritage – from the deep time of the Triassic geological period through the Roman occupation and the Middle Ages to the present day.
Paul – a one-time Heritage Interpretation Officer at Chester City Council – will provide a highly illustrated introduction to Chester’s ancient bedrock (the Chester Formation) that is exposed throughout the city together with its use as masonry from Roman times.
The talk will shed light on how old it is and how it was formed, consider the vast distance it has travelled, and explain why it is mostly a shade of red. Paul will also refer to examples of buildings where the local sandstone has been used, as well as those constructed using masonry sourced from the nearby Helsby Sandstone Formation (rocks that also date from the Triassic Period).
Doors open: 7:10pm and we ask that people are seated for a prompt start at 7:30pm
