About this Event

Upcycle & Restyle Your Knitwear

Transform a tired jumper into a one-of-a-kind favourite! Whether it's hiding in the back of your wardrobe with moth holes, stretched sleeves, faded patches or simply an outdated style, this hands-on workshop will show you how to breathe new life into your knitwear.

Over three inspiring hours, Kirsty will guide you through a range of creative repair and upcycling techniques to help you confidently begin your own transformation. You'll explore methods including Swiss darning, visible mending, cutting and re-knitting, weaving and other simple embellishment techniques that can turn worn knitwear into something fresh, stylish and uniquely yours.

Perhaps you've discovered a woollen treasure at an op shop, or you have a much-loved jumper that's too special to throw away. This workshop is all about embracing creativity, extending the life of clothing, and discovering the joy of slow fashion.

You'll leave with new skills, plenty of inspiration, and the confidence to rescue knitwear from the back of the cupboard and return it to your wardrobe with pride.

Perfect for: Beginners who can already knit through to experienced makers. Bring along one or two knitwear items you'd love to transform.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is suitable for beginner and experienced knitters, who are confident in knitting, picking up stitches, knowing how to 'read' your knitting and preferably have completed knitting a garment such as a jumper.

Note: this workshop will not teach you hhohw to knit

****

What do I bring?

A knitted garment(s) to upcycle and restyle.

Preferably your garment should be handknitted and or have a largish knit (8 ply or larger) without any complicated stitching such as cable and lace stitching. To get started on some of these techniques stocking stitch is the best.

Kirsty Mate is a professional designer, educator and artist with a passion for sustainability and design as well as for knitting.

Her passion for knitting started when she was a young girl learning the skill wrapped within the arms of her mother as she helped her wind the wool around the needle and off to create a stitch. Kirsty has not only knitted many, many garments but in 1986 she won a national knitting design competition to design a jumper for Lady Di, providing her with her first journey to Europe. In more recent years, she has explored how different materials such as licorice and plastic can be transformed through the art of knitting and how knitting can be a social activity in public places.

As well, with over 30 years of experience in sustainable design, you could say she is a pioneer. Her career in design has crossed many disciplines including architecture, interior design, textiles design, exhibition design, and performance art; has taken her around the world and into a successful career in academia as well as industry. She is widely published and has exhibited her work in both design and art.

With these two passions, she is excited to be able to teach knitting to beginners and how this skill can advance us towards a slow and circular approach to clothing.
