Explore the amazing natural history - past and present - of the River Ouse on this family-friendly walk.
About this Event

The River Ouse runs through the heart of York. It is also at the heart of the city's natural history. Join York's Hidden History on this fun, family-friendly walk as we explore the riverside wildlife of York, past and present.

With surprising stories and incredible images the Wild Water Walk will bring the nature of the Ouse to life. We'll tell tales of tansy beetles, eels and egrets, as well as Yorkshire hyenas, lost belugas, and giant Ice Age deer. We'll look for 200 year-old maps and 300 million year-old rocks, whilst thinking also of the future, from climate change and riverside biodiversity to how natural river management can help York's flood resilience.

The Wild Water Walk will start in Leeman Park, on the south side of the Ouse just west of Scarborough Rail Bridge (Google Maps location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/qaNud4wZfz4kzVot8; What3Words location: https://what3words.com/army.tricky.locals), cross the river to explore York Museum Gardens, and then cross the river again to finish in North Street Gardens (Google Maps: What3Words: https://w3w.co/backup.grass.lanes). In the event of very wet weather, the walk will finish at the City Screen Picturehouse on Coney Street.

The walk.takes around 90 minutes, and is aimed at everyone aged 6 and upwards. The main route via Scarborough Rail Bridge and Lendal Bridge is not step-free, but a longer, step-free version is available if required.

This event is part of the York rivers trail: the rivers and us.

About the York rivers trail
The York rivers trail: the rivers and us is a new trail along the River Ouse connecting people, place and flood resilience. Co-designed with communities, schools and artists, it uses art, storytelling and digital tools to reveal how upstream and downstream are connected - and how nature-based solutions are helping York adapt to a changing climate.
