1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $45, Materials: $13
This introductory studio course offers a hands-on experience in the craft of letterpress printing. Letterpress, a traditional branch of printmaking, uses raised type to create a textured ink relief on paper. Students will learn to print using a restored Model 1920C Kelsey 5” x 3” tabletop press, as well as design, set, and produce their own printed materials.
The course will introduce the fundamentals of typography, provide insight into the mechanics of the press, and explore the evolution of printing. Students will have the opportunity to design their own message and set it using metal type. Once secured in the printing press, they will create a proof with their message embossed on paper. Each student is encouraged to print multiple cards, experimenting with different arrangements and exploring the expressive potential of typography.
Optional additional reading material:
Thinking with Type | Ellen Lupton
The Elements of Typographic Style | Robert Bringhurst
A Short History of the Printed Word | Warren Chappell
The Art of the Book | Charles Holme
Instructor: Gabriel Evenson
