9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Tuition: $90, Materials: $13
Sigurd Olson’s legacy of wilderness education echoes across the Boundary Waters and beyond. Through nature writing, students will immerse themselves in Sigurd’s landscape and connect with his legacy. In a supportive group, students will generate written pieces through reading, discussion, contemplation, walking, and free-flowing writing exercises. Class size is limited.
This workshop will meet at the Ely Folk School, but take place primarily in Sigurd’s historic town home in Ely, now the headquarters of the Listening Point Foundation.
This class includes a short presentation about the Listening Point Foundation and Sigurd Olson's legacy. Students will have the opportunity to register for a tour of Sigurd Olson's cabin, which was a beloved retreat for the writer and environmentalist and became widely celebrated after his book, Listening Point, was published in 1958. Students will have the option to carpool or drive independently from the Folk School to Sigurd's Ely house.
Class time will include a break for lunch; students are encouraged to bring a bag lunch and will have access to a full kitchen with fridge and microwave as needed. Please bring a notebook and writing utensil of your choice.
