About this Event
Welcome to small group training that stands in the gap for people with Parkinson's (PWP).
Participants will learn science backed movements that target specific symptoms, learn strategies for coping with and breaking out of annoying movement issues, learn how to strive for optimal brain performance, and prepare physically in ways that will make both PWP and their loved ones "Fall Experts." Expect to learn a lot, work hard (for that dopamine), benefit from incredible group and instructor support, and LAUGH.
WHAT TO KNOW
No one gets to watch.
Unlike many group trainings geared toward disease, caretakers and loved ones are required to participate. Here we understand that being watched feels weird and disempowering and that people who live with PWP need health and education as much as individuals with the diagnoses. Anyone who provides support to a PWP needs to be easy to hold weight, lift, pull, push, and break a fall. That means come ready, dressed for a workout.
This building is a private studio with limited accessibility. Partipants must be able to:
-walk with or without an assistive device
-see, speak and hear (hearing aids and some hearing loss are fine)
-sit to stand in less than 60 seconds
-use a restroom alone, without stall bars or rails
-arrange their own transportation to and from the gym
-bring an ally or provide an emergency contact within 30 min travel time
ISSUES WE CAN HANDLE
This training is led by a person trained in PD exercise and the activities are designed to be adaptable. Here are some reasons NOT to skip:
-freezing or slow gait
-active tremor
-dyskinesia
-"off time" (we DO encourage you to time your meds to be "on" during training if possible)
-depressed or anxious mood
-imbalance (bring your walking implement)
-rigidity
-low energy
ISSUES WE DON'T HANDLE
While we want to serve everyone, this training is specifically for healthy adults with PD who can generally still perform a large number of regular activities with or without limited assistance who want to sustain their abilities to do so (e.g. shopping, dressing, walking, leisure activities, community activites, communicating, etc). Here are reasons to SKIP this training:
-Stage 4 or 5 PD
-sick or presenting with fever
-recent injury that has yet to be treated
-Unable to stand or maintain balance for several minutes
- wheelchair dependent (talk to us about private training)
-cannot see, speak, or hear
