Description:

In this intimate lunchtime author talk, Tash Aw discusses his latest novel, The South, set on a once-flourishing farm in rural Malaysia. Following the death of a patriarch, the novel traces one summer in which land, family, and inheritance begin to fracture. At its heart is a tender queer coming-of-age story, as teenager Jay forms a transformative bond with Chuan, the farm manager’s son, awakening desire, self-knowledge, and courage. Alongside this, Aw explores a failing marriage and generational regret. Longlisted for the Booker Prize, The South is an intimate meditation on belonging, change, and becoming.

About the Speaker:

Tash Aw is the author of five novels, including, most recently, The South, and a memoir of a Chinese-Malaysian family, Strangers on a Pier, finalist for the Los Angeles Book Prize. His work has won the Whitbread and Commonwealth Prizes, an O. Henry Award and been longlisted three times for the MAN Booker Prize. His novels have been translated into 26 languages and been longlisted for the Prix Médicis Étranger, Prix Inrocks and Premio Gregor von Rezzori. As an essayist and critic, he has contributed to The Paris Review, New York Review of Books, New York Times, and The Guardian, among many other
publications. He lives in Paris and Kuala Lumpur.
