Description:

What does it mean to create and to build creative ecosystems across cultures today? This conversation brings together novelist and cultural leader Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor, whose work extends beyond the page to shaping Kenya’s literary and film landscapes through festivals and cultural platforms; Myrna Ayad, an acclaimed writer and editor documenting artistic lives across the Arab world; and Sin Sin Man, founder of Sin Sin Atelier, whose curatorial practice champions Indonesian artists and craftspeople within Hong Kong’s contemporary art scene.
Together, they explore creativity in a global context: from nurturing local voices and cultural infrastructure to translating ideas across borders, audiences, and mediums in order to ask how art can remain rooted while speaking to the world.

*This event is presented in partnership with The Emirates Literature Foundation.

*This event is presented with the support of the International Writers’ Workshop at Hong Kong Baptist University.

About the Speaker:

Myrna Ayad

For over two decades, Myrna Ayad has authored, edited, and contributed to several books, magazines and dailies on visual art and culture from the Arab world and Iran. A frequent panellist, jurist, and moderator, her role as an independent cultural strategist allows her to work on projects within the luxury sector, government entities, private companies, and non-profit organisations. She is the founder and author of Noor’s Heroes, a series of illustrated children’s books focused on Arab greats.

Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor

Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor, born in Nairobi, Kenya, is an acclaimed novelist and writer exploring African histories, multipolar futures, nature, myth and the human condition experience. She holds degrees from Kenyatta University, the University of Reading, and the University of Queensland. Her Caine Prize-winning novella, The Weight of Whispers (2003), and novels Dust (2014) and The Dragonfly Sea (2019) have received international acclaim. Yvonne works with Kenyan conservation organisations to develop nature stories. She is a co-founder of the Macondo Literature Festival. She is finalising work on her fourth novel, Nocturne.

Sin Sin Man

Sin Sin Man is a visionary artist dedicated to creating works that enhance daily life. Her philosophy centers on five essentials: clothing, food, shelter, transportation, and the natural elements—metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Known for elegant silhouettes and unique details, she opened her Hong Kong atelier in 1998, fostering creativity and wearable art. In 2003, she founded Sin Sin Fine Art, collaborating with over 40 artists and curating 100+ exhibitions, celebrating global artistry.
