Intro to Glazing with Oil Paints

Glazing is one of the most beautiful and transformative techniques in traditional oil painting. Used by the Old Masters for centuries, glazing involves applying thin, transparent layers of colour over dry paint to create depth, luminosity, richness, and subtle shifts in tone that can’t be achieved through direct painting alone.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to glaze paintings using a classical approach, exploring how transparent colour, medium, and layering work together to bring a painting to life. We’ll cover colour temperature, drying considerations, medium mixing, and how to build atmosphere and light through successive layers.

This workshop is ideal for people who already have some painting experience, whether in oils, acrylics, watercolour, or other mediums, but who are new to glazing techniques. It is not suitable for complete beginners with no prior painting experience.

You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of traditional painting methods and practical techniques you can continue using in your own work.
