About this Event
Graphic Communication Summer School 2026 – Winchester School of Art
THE VISUAL IDENTITY OF MUSIC
Age group: 13 - 18
Duration: 2 day
Dates: 30th & 31st July
Times: 10:30 – 15:30
At our free Winchester School of Art Graphic Communication Summer School, we will be exploring the impact of illustration in the shaping of musical culture and artist identities. You will explore how to create lo-fi physical pieces of media exploring concepts such as typography, collage, shape language, and colour theory.
Please note that we will not be learning digital based technical skills such as digital drawing or use of the Adobe Suite as part of this course. It is intended to explore analogue design development through other means such as illustration, exploring media textures, and printmaking.
During our sessions we will creating analogue media either for an existing band you love, or one you create yourself. We will begin by exploring the visualisation of sound, looking into genre aesthetics, and mood boarding, before creating your own music campaign. After delving into current examples of analogue design for music like posters, tickets, vinyl, and zines we will begin to plan our own designs, imagining the musician/band we are exploring is unknown. How might we create a solid identity for them? We will use mixed media methods to create lo-fi elements for a music campaign, in a way that feels aligned with your own practice. Students interested in illustration may want to design a gatefold vinyl record sleeve, while others may like to create a printed tote design! This session is all about exploring branding in a way that is highly creative and works for you.
Students who are interested in illustration, analogue making methods, graphic design, and music will benefit most from this course.
At the end of the sessions, you will have explored the methods, and associated artists, as well as experiencing university materials and teaching styles. These courses are additionally developed with all learners in mind, employing inclusive techniques allowing those who may find school difficult to experiment and explore in a comfortable environment. The samples made and development created on this course is prefect for college or university application portfolios, or just as a fun way to explore creativity during the summer holidays! Students do not need any previous experience for this course.
We will also be running a series of other sessions over the summer, do take a look at our Eventbrite page to find out more about our: Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Games Design, Fashion, and Textiles courses.
