About this Event
Fine Art School 2026 – Winchester School of Art
PRINTMAKING AS PROTEST
Age group: 13 - 18
Duration: 2 day
Dates: 27rd & 28th July
Times: 10:30 – 15:30
At our free Winchester School of Art Fine Art Summer School, we will be exploring the theme of visual activism, and printmaking as protest. You will learn how to translate your own ideals and causes that matter to you into a series of fine art pieces, to share and take away.
During our sessions we will explore printmaking methods such as letterpress on the galley press, monotype, and chine-collé, to make our own mini protest packs. These can be kept for yourself, or shared around with other members of the group, to promote artist community style collaboration. We will take inspiration from artists such as Bob and Roberta Smith, Jenny Holzer, Shepard Fairey, Corita, Kent and Peter Driver. Initially we will explore these artists for inspiration, then think about causes that matter to you personally. This can be anything from education equality, animal rights, anti-AI in art, whatever interests you! Once you have selected your area of interest, we will begin to delve into how symbols and motifs, text, and book arts can be used to increase awareness in engaging ways. By the end of the 2 days, you will have your own pack of printed ephemera, and maybe even some shared work of others!
Students who are interested in illustration, printmaking, book making, text, public art, and activism will benefit most from this course.
At the end of the sessions, you will have explored the methods, and associated artists, as well as experiencing university materials and teaching styles. These courses are additionally developed with all learners in mind, employing inclusive techniques allowing those who may find school difficult to experiment and explore in a comfortable environment. The samples made and development created on this course is prefect for college or university application portfolios, or just as a fun way to explore creativity during the summer holidays! Students do not need any previous experience for this course.
We will also be running a series of other sessions over the summer, do take a look at our Eventbrite page to find out more about our: Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Games Design, Fashion, and Textiles courses.
