Eddie Moore came to Kansas City from Houston in 2010 to study under Bobby Watson at the UMKC Conservatory, and the city has been claiming him as its own ever since. His formula — he calls it "jazz on jazz with a hip-hop methodology" — moves from soulful acoustic piano lyricism to synth-stacked groove inside a single set, and it's made him one of the most honored musicians of his KC generation: a Charlotte Street Foundation Generative Performing Artist Award, Plastic Sax's Person of the Year, and an artist residency at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.
The records tell the range. Kings & Queens (Ropeadope) put his band The Outer Circle on the national map; Bando with his group We The People folded in DJs and sampling; and his latest, 2025's What Makes Us, strips it back to an acoustic trio with drummer Jaylen Ward and bassist Ben Tervort, plus rising vibraphonist Isaiah Petrie. Along the way his music has landed in Netflix's Queer Eye and a national Sprint spot, and he's shared stages with Erykah Badu, Brian Blade, Ledisi, and Bilal.
Moore gives back as hard as he plays — he founded the Crossroads artist incubator Tribe Studios, ran jam sessions that fed a generation of young players, and now teaches jazz at the University of Kansas. But the bandstand is where it all comes together. Friday night, one of KC's true originals is back in the room where modern Kansas City jazz lives.
