About this Event

The front line at Monday's jam is one you almost never see: Loren Broaddus leads his quartet on the French horn, an instrument nearly nobody dares to swing. Springfield-raised, he started piano at six and found the horn at eleven; a master's degree at the UMKC Conservatory brought him to Kansas City in 2023, and he's been making the city's stages his own ever since — Corvino, Vine Street Brewing, the Westport Bowery, and the Blue Room among them.

He's also one of the most prolific young composers in town. His latest album, Blackout!! — released this June — is a chordless horn trio pushing into free jazz and post-bop, and 2024's The Sentimental Rebel is a six-movement jazz tone poem about growing up an outsider. The family art runs deep: his father is a published poet whose books celebrate the Negro Leagues, and Blackout!! sets one of his dad's poems to music. Monday night, the son hosts the jam a block from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum — an 18th & Vine story if there ever was one.

After the featured set, the stage opens up. Horn players, vocalists, rhythm sections, students working up their first tune — everybody gets a shot. Bring your instrument. Bring your ears.

Cover: $10 general public; free for AJM members, musicians, and students. The featured set starts at 7 pm; sign up at the door to sit in.
