About this Event

IMPROV: Jazz as Resistance, Memory as Power is a multidisciplinary exhibition exploring jazz as a force for survival, self-expression, cultural memory, and liberation. Through visual art, live music, performance, and storytelling, the experience examines how improvisation has helped generations of artists respond to injustice, preserve identity, and transform struggle into creative power.

Presented at the ArtsKC Gallery from August 7–30, 2026, the exhibition invites guests to move through an immersive gathering of images, sounds, stories, and ideas rooted in the legacy and continuing evolution of jazz. Attendees can expect an engaging experience that connects history with the present while celebrating the artists, communities, and movements that continue to shape the music.
