About this Event

Tour of Energy House 2.0 with Professor Will Swan

Join Professor Will Swan, Director of the Queen Elizabeth Award-winning Energy House Laboratories at the University of Salford, for an exclusive tour of Energy House 2.0—one of the largest purpose-built building performance test laboratories in the world.

Professor Swan has led the University's energy and buildings research for more than a decade and is a leading expert in building performance, retrofit, and sustainable construction. As Director of the Energy House Laboratories and Director of Sustainability at the University of Salford, he has worked with industry, government, and policymakers to help shape the future of low-carbon housing. During the tour, he will share insights into the groundbreaking research taking place at the facility and how it is helping to develop the homes of tomorrow.

Opened in 2023, Energy House 2.0 features two full-scale environmental chambers capable of recreating temperatures from -23.5°C to +51°C, with precisely controlled humidity and weather conditions.

You'll discover how researchers construct full-sized buildings inside these chambers to test their performance under realistic and extreme climates. Purpose-designed "green field" sites, large hangar doors, and foundation pits allow properties to be built using conventional construction methods, while integrated sensor arrays capture detailed data on every aspect of building energy performance.

Learn how the facility supports research into a wide range of building types from the UK and around the world, enabling structures to be built, tested, and replaced to investigate new construction methods and technologies.

Professor Swan will also explain how the Energy House 2.0 team collaborates with major housebuilders, manufacturers, and innovative start-ups to advance the Future Homes Standard. Current research explores building fabric, heating systems, domestic hot water, overheating, electric vehicle performance, and other technologies that will shape the next generation of energy-efficient homes.

This is a rare opportunity to explore a world-leading research facility with one of the UK's leading experts in building performance and sustainability, and to gain a behind-the-scenes look at research that is transforming the future of housing.
