History of the Masonic Temple
Did you know?
• The whole room is Grade II listed
• Built in 1912 by Charles Barry Jr. (son of Charles Barry, the architect responsible for the Houses of Parliament)
• Cost £50,000 at the time, equivalent of £4 million today.
• It was considered one of the grandest masonic temples of it's time
• It was built out of a need to have a competitive advantage against other
railway hotels being built in London at the time.
• The Freemasons helped fund the Temple’s construction
• The Temple is preceded by a spacious mahogany-paneled anteroom
• It is completely covered in 12 rare types of Italian marble
• The 4 hanging light shades look like alabaster but are made of marble
• All chairs are made of heavy mahogany, including the 4 grand thrones
• The room features a splendid zodiac gilded ceiling
• The columns are in Doric and Ionic greek architectural orders
• Above the thrones is the latin words Avdi Veda Tace (Hear, See, Keep Counsel)
The cool facts
• The Temple was first chaired by Prince Arthur, Grand Master Duke of
Connaught, seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria
• The Temple is a popular backdrop for events such as photoshoots for example Lady Gaga Hello Kitty photoshoot was done here and many fashion shows, product launches, music videos and cabaret dinners.
