We’ve felt a deep calling to undertake the ancient Shikoku Pilgrimage in Japan this coming March. The route encircles the island of Shikoku, leading pilgrims to 88 Buddhist temples each believed to be connected to the revered monk Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi). Stretching over 1,200 kilometers, this pilgrimage has guided countless seekers for over a millennium, inspiring them to grow in compassion, humility, and understanding.
As we plan to set out in early spring, we’ll walk through a landscape just awakening from winter—hillsides hinting at fresh greenery, coastal villages coming to life under gentler skies, and temple grounds imbued with centuries of devotion. Visiting these 88 temples isn’t just about reaching a destination; each stop invites us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the core values that make life meaningful. Here, pilgrims practice mindful silence, offer prayers, and learn to appreciate the smallest acts of kindness.
Your support will help us cover the basics of our pilgrimage: simple lodging in local guesthouses in between camping, modest meals to sustain us, and sturdy gear to keep us safe on the road. More than these essentials, your contributions will help create a space within which we can truly listen to the teachings of the temples, appreciate the gestures of osetai, and carry the blessings of this ancient route in our hearts.
We promise to walk with your generosity in mind, offering prayers and reflections for everyone who has guided us along the way. Thank you for supporting us as we take these humble steps—towards deeper understanding, heartfelt gratitude, and a more compassionate world.
