About this Event

‘Memory, Mud, Mind’ is an all-day intergenerational workshop including a morning river walk in Avalon Marshes, talk by Dr Richard Brunning, and the co-creation of artworks led by collaborating artists in the afternoon. For ages 6 upwards.

Walk: collecting natural/man-made natural/man-made river debris, (rocks, bones, grasses, silt, wood, plants, plastic, metal/miscellaneous objects..) capturing the place, story-telling through objects. The walk will also involve photography, conversations, audio recordings, casting found objects.

Short Talk: by Dr Richard Brunning (MCIFA), Senior Historic Environment Officer, South West Heritage Trust, on the ancient timber sweet track, (replica can be seen on the Marshes walk, which he built).

Workshop: making collective sculptural work, with experienced artists/workshop leaders Duncan Cameron, David Kefford & Richard Tomlinson.

On the day at Avalon Marshes, there will also be an ancient music day so you may hear the sounds of the Iron Age and Roman periods wafting across the site.

*Work created will form part of our final 'As Old as the Hills' exhibition, at the iconic Bauhaus (Zig Zag) building, Glastonbury.

is a community art project curated by Fiona Campbell and Jan Ollis, rooted in heritage and environment, highlighting issues of sustainability. It culminates in an immersive contemporary art exhibition plus events in the Zig Zag building, Glastonbury for Somerset Art Weeks Festival (21 Sept-6 Oct '24).

The title ‘As Old as the Hills’ relates to the ancient layered history of the Mendip Hills. Mendip was engulfed by ocean more than 200M yrs ago.

10 prominent artists (6 Somerset-based) will create site-responsive work in residencies and work with the community, developing collaborative art: installation, sculpture, textiles, film, photography, performance. Large-scale mixed media installations, hangings and smaller works; incongruous juxtapositions, magical translucent layers, dramatic light/shadow. Artworks will respond particularly to climate change, focussing on local floods and water pollution.

Community engagement and education are at the heart of this project.
