Woodblock Printmaking Workshop: Techniques for Big Ink & Beyond
About this Event
Join us for a hands-on exploration of woodblock printmaking, designed both as preparation for our upcoming Big Ink event and as a standalone introduction to this centuries-old relief printing technique. Participants will learn the fundamentals of carving, inking, and printing large-scale woodblocks, gaining practical skills and confidence to approach their own Big Ink projects — or simply to enjoy the meditative, physical process of printmaking.
Led by artist and experienced printmaker Audra Furgal, this workshop will cover:
Carving techniques: how to read wood grain, choose the right tools, and carve with control and intention
Inking methods: applying ink evenly for bold, consistent impressions, including techniques suited to oversized blocks
Printing approaches: hand-burnishing, using a baren, and other methods for pulling a clean print without a press
Troubleshooting common challenges: uneven ink coverage, registration issues, and block maintenance
Whether you're gearing up to participate in Big Ink — the community printmaking event inviting participants to carve and print monumental woodblocks — or simply want to try your hand at traditional relief printing, this workshop offers practical, transferable skills for printmakers of all levels.
