Women's Aid NEL IDVA Open Day
About this Event
Want to find out what it’s like to be an IDVA?
Have you ever thought about supporting people affected by domestic abuse but worried that you don't know enough about the role?
Perhaps you’ve seen an IDVA role advertised but aren’t quite sure what the job involves, what experience you need or whether it could be right for you.
Our IDVA Open Day is an informal opportunity to find out more about the role of an Independent Domestic Violence Advocate and about working with Women’s Aid NEL.
Come along and meet members of our team, managers and service users, ask questions and get a better understanding of both the role and our organisation.
We have two sessions available. Both of these are on Friday 21st August.
9.30am - 11.30am
1pm - 3pm
Many people assume they need qualifications or previous domestic abuse experience to become an IDVA. The good news is that knowledge and skills can be taught, some of the most important qualities cannot. We are looking for friendly people with compassion, commitment, professionalism, resilience and a genuine desire to make a difference.
We're looking for people who:
- Genuinely care about others
- Believe survivors deserve to be heard and supported
- Are compassionate, friendly and approachable
- Can remain professional in challenging situations
- Have integrity, commitment and resilience
- Are organised and like to plan & structure their time and workload with excellent attention to detail
- Want to make a meaningful difference in people's lives
Training, knowledge and experience can all be developed.
Passion, kindness and commitment are much harder to teach.
We also believe in being honest.
Being an IDVA is incredibly rewarding, but it is not an easy job.
You will support victims and survivors who may be experiencing some of the most difficult and dangerous periods of their lives. The role involves managing a high-risk, fast-moving caseload and ensuring that every survivor receives consistent, professional and effective support. The work can be challenging, but it is also deeply meaningful. Every day brings opportunities to support survivors towards safety, recovery and a better future.
On the day, you can:
- Find out what an IDVA is and what the role involves
- Understand what a typical day looks like
- Understand how IDVAs support those experiencing domestic abuse
- Find out about the skills and experience we look for
- Learn about training and development opportunities
- Chat and ask questions to managers and services users
Who is the Open Day for?
You might be considering a career change or simply want to understand whether your existing skills could transfer into an IDVA role.
You don’t need to know everything about being an IDVA before you come along. That’s exactly what the Open Day is for.
There’s no formal interview and no obligation to apply for a role following the open day, we would just love you to come along, meet us, ask questions and find out whether becoming an IDVA with Women’s Aid NEL could be your next step.
We look forward to welcoming you to our Open Day.
Please note, there is limited parking at our women's centre so we kindly ask that you make alternative arrangements. Our closest car park is Duchess Street, just a few minutes walk away.
