About this Event
Let’s talk about land access and ownership in Cornwall.Whilst nationally we only have the right to roam over 8% of the land, here in Kernow it is an even more measly 3%. This largely accounts for the South West Coastpath and areas of Bodmin Moor, leaving other areas inland stripped of any such access.
We have an abundance of landowners with inherited wealth, where the land has been locked up in the same families for centuries, for example: Menabilly Estate, which has belonged to the Rashleigh family since the 16th century and own approximately 4% of the entirety of Cornwall. The Duchy of Cornwall is also a notable presence here, where the King of England owns approximately 20,000 acres of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, wrapped up in the semi-feudal system we’re still ruled by.
Now, more than ever, is the right time to fight for a new system that prioritises Cornish people’s right to access the natural world.
