About this Event
Most of us operate inside of what’s familiar. The routines we know. The rules we’ve learned. The safe patterns that make life predictable and manageable.
But just beyond the edges of our map lies freedom, adventure, and new possibility.
If you’re willing to face the dragons. The fear that comes with the unknown.
In this session, Alex Barker, from Be More Pirate, explores the idea of deliberately stepping beyond the edges of your map — and what happens when you do.
Be More Pirate began as a movement inspired by the real history of pirates: communities that challenged the rules of their time, rewrote systems that didn’t work, and experimented with radically different ways of organising power and leadership.
Now she is pushing it further. In a personal project called Explore Your Edges, she and two collaborators have created 100 experiments in living more unconventionally — practical actions to help them unlearn old mindsets, test out entirely new terrain and question the assumptions that shape their lives and work.
Some experiments are bold. Some are creative. Some are simply a little uncomfortable. The session will also cover some of the behavioural psychology behind conformity - why is it so hard to take that first step into the unknown? Expect stories, ideas and an invitation to face a few dragons of your own. Because courage isn’t something you talk about. It’s something you practice.
For Bath Digital Festival’s “What If?” theme, this session asks:
What if the most important innovation you could make was in the way you live and lead?
Who should attend
- Founders, leaders and innovators who advocate creativity but feel stuck in familiar patterns
- Career pivoters who want something that gives them the edge
- Anyone interested in courage, curiosity and unconventional leadership
If you suspect that what got you here might not get you where you want to go next, this session might be the invitation you need to explore the edges.
