Technology Fast and Slow in an Age of Acceleration

.
About this Event

Every week seems to bring another technological shift. AI breakthroughs. New developer tools and application frameworks, each requiring new skills. Security threats evolving faster than policies can keep up. Cloud platforms reshaping how software is built and delivered.

AI may dominate headlines, but it is a symptom of broader shifts across the technology stack. Development models are evolving. Architectures are becoming more distributed. Innovation cycles are accelerating while governance, organisational structures and buying patterns struggle to keep pace. Above all, thresholds to change are dropping.

For technology professionals, the challenge is understanding how and where to act: that is, where you can actually have impact and influence. The good news is that not all change is happening at the same speed. Some technologies move extraordinarily fast while others remain constrained byI want the startup founder deciding how, not where regulation, architecture, supply chain and organisational realities.

So, for Bath Digital Festival’s “What If?” theme, this session asks a practical question.

What if we could step back from the headlines and actually understand the forces shaping the technology landscape?

Industry analyst Jon Collins explores the forces shaping the next wave of technology change — and why some parts of the landscape are accelerating while others move more slowly.

Understanding the dynamics matters, because the implications differ depending on where you sit.

Are you a developer navigating new tools and architectures?
A technology leader shaping strategy and investment?
A startup founder deciding how to harness the next opportunity?

In 30 minutes, Jon will unpack the megatrends driving change across the technology sector and offer practical guidance on what technology professionals should be thinking about next.

With more than 35 years in the technology industry, Jon brings a rare breadth of perspective. His career spans roles as a developer, systems manager, IT director, consultant, journalist and industry analyst. As such, he has spent decades interpreting the technology landscape to enable companies, vendors and people at the front lines of technology drive change and deliver value.

Who should attend

This session is designed for technology professionals looking for clarity in a rapidly shifting landscape, including:

  • Software developers and engineers navigating fast-changing tools and architectures
  • Technology leaders and CTOs shaping strategy and investment decisions
  • Startup founders and product leaders looking to understand how to seize the next opportunity
  • Security and infrastructure professionals working at the sharp edge of technological change
  • Anyone working in tech who wants a clearer view of what is really happening across the industry

If you’ve ever wondered whether the pace of change in technology is accelerating beyond comprehension — and what it means for your work — this session offers a chance to step back and make sense of the bigger picture.

Because understanding the dynamics behind the megatrends is key to having influence and impact in a rapidly changing future.
