This is a family friendly event for kids (old enough to be outside for a duration while laying wreaths) and family of all ages. We’d love to count on your attendance on Saturday, Dec. 13 for this special opportunity.More details below, see you there! By registering, we can have an accurate headcount of support from NC State DMV’s alumni and friends.
Date: Saturday | December 13 | 10 a.m.
Location: United States Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery | 21 Harewood Rd NW | Washington, DC
Cost: Free
Deadline to register: December 10
Parking is limited so we recommend arriving no later than 10am and/or use public transportation. You can access the Metro via the Brookland station, which is a 30-minute walk or a short Uber ride. Once parking within the cemetery is full, participants will be directed to an overflow lot. Make sure to allow extra time for locating our group.
Upon arriving at the cemetery, look for alum Abe Washington, who will be wearing red and have a NC State sign. If you’re using GPS to get to the event, search “Soldiers Home Cemetery, Washington, D.C.” The cemetery is located at the corner of North Capitol Street and Harewood Road. When you arrive, please follow the people and signs to the site of the ceremony itself. Please dress for the weather since the event is outdoors. Work or gardening gloves are also helpful with handling the wreaths.
We ask our volunteers to help unload the wreaths from the trucks, at 10:30 AM, but please note, wreaths will not be placed until after the ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 12:00 Noon with wreath placement to follow immediately after at approx 12:30 PM. WE would like to take an alumni group picture after the ceremony and before we start laying wreaths. When you place the wreath please have the bow at the top, read the veteran’s name aloud, and take a moment to reflect.
The US Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery is our first national cemetery. It was established in July 1861, for the burial of U.S. soldiers and officers. The first burials in this cemetery were made on August third, 1861. The cemetery is currently nearly 16 acres in size and is the resting place for 21 Medal of Honor recipients. Currently, 14,000 veterans are buried here.
You may wish to help this location lay wreaths at as many graves as possible by clicking the red “Sponsor” button on the event’s website.
