About
This is an auditioned choir specially curated for experienced musicians, choristers, music teachers, and conductors who are passionate about choral excellence and collaborative music-making. The Virtuosi Festival Chorus will be led by our guest clinician Mak Chi Hoe alongside VOS Men conductor Justin Goh, offering a meaningful and challenging musical experience for all participants.
About Mak Chi Hoe
Chi Hoe enjoys a varied and busy career as an award-winning choral conductor, singer, educator, adjudicator and clinician. He is currently Artistic Director of Young Choral Academy, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Penang Philharmonic Chorus, Principal Artist and Resident Chorus Master of Kuala Lumpur City Opera in Malaysia. As a choral conductor, Chi Hoe is co-founder of the Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod (MCE) and has won numerous prizes and awards with his choirs. He was the first Asian conductor to win a prestigious fellowship to work with the London Symphony Chorus in 2010 which launched his conducting career in the UK.
Chi Hoe has been on the jury at several international choir festivals and presented as a clinician in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Myanmar, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, UK, Vietnam and throughout Malaysia. A singer of noted versatility and winner of the 2015 and 2024 Cameronian Arts Award for Best Vocal Performance of the year, Chi Hoe is in demand both as a soloist in opera, concert, recital and as well as for consort work throughout Malaysia and abroad.
Eligibility
- Minimum age of 21 years old.
- Background as a musician, chorister, music teacher, and/or conductor
- Proficient in sight-reading music with accurate pitching and rhythm
- Able to sing confidently and maintain strong complex harmony in more than 4 parts
- Capable of preparing music independently prior to the rehearsal

* All rehearsals are compulsory. The first two rehearsals will be led by VOS conductors, while the final two rehearsals will be conducted by the clinician.

Audition Process
- Please list your music and choral experience from the past five years, including (but not limited to) any choir performances, ensembles, solo work, or relevant training
- Please submit a video of yourself singing ‘Regina Caeli’ from bar 8 to 35. A video taken on your mobile phone is sufficient. Please name it in such format: Name_voice part. You may find the score for the audition here: Regina Caeli (audition portion).pdf
- Applicants who do not meet the required experience level for the Virtuosi Festival Chorus will be advised to join either the Youth or Community Festival Chorus instead
- Please prepare your audition recording before completing this form as you will need to submit your recording link in this form.
Stage Dress Code
Formal performance wear in black only, full length to the ankles, with black footwear.
Cost
The participation fee for Festival Choruses would be $38 before GST and booking fee.
Memory Work
Scores are permitted for performance. No memory work is required.
