Join us as Yuyang Liu and Steve Harris share insights on Quantum Computing and Its relationship to AI.
This presentation provides an accessible introduction to quantum computing, explaining how quantum computers differ fundamentally from classical computers. The audience will learn about the core concepts of quantum mechanical principles and spookiness, and how these enable new approaches to computation. The talk will also describe the basic workflow of a quantum computer, from encoding information to performing computations and extracting results, and introduce several landmark quantum algorithms that demonstrate potential computational advantages.
The presentation also includes an overview of current quantum hardware platforms, including superconducting circuits, neutral atoms, and photonic systems, along with the major technical challenges facing the field, such as decoherence, noise, and quantum error correction. This talk will provide attendees with a balanced perspective on both the promise and the current limitations of quantum computing.
Following Yuyang's quantum computing session, Steve Harris share a practitioner’s view of what he learned from completing IBM’s Quantum Machine Learning course (https://quantum.cloud.ibm.com/learning/en/courses/quantum-machine-learning - highly recommended).
Steve will focus more on the practical lessons: where quantum approaches may fit into AI Machine Learning workflows, where the overheads show up, and why quantum machine learning is powerful but very far from being suitable for every ML problem.

About the Presenter:
The presenter of this talk will be Yuyang Liu. Yuyang Liu is a second-year physics graduate student at UVic currently working on experimental quantum optics and quantum information.
With more than four years of experience working in experimental quantum physics, Yuyang is the perfect candidate for presenting quantum computation and its realization to the general public.
