UNSW Law Journal Issue 47(3) Launch

The University of New South Wales Law Journal is delighted to announce the launch of Issue 47(3), where the Honourable Marcia Neave AO will deliver a keynote address on the theme, ‘Access to Health, Law and Justice: Opening Doors and Overcoming Barriers’. Currently a part-time Commissioner of the Australian Law Reform Commission and Chair of Justice Connect, Justice Neave has had a long and distinguished career, which has included chairing several inquiries and a Royal Commission, and working on various law reform commissions. In addition, Justice Neave was the first academic in Victoria’s history to be appointed to the Victorian Court of Appeal, where she presided for nine years before retiring in 2014. Justice Neave was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for her services to the law in 1999, was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001 and is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

The areas of health, law and justice are perhaps the three most important elements of an individual’s life, and the articles in Issue 47(3) take on the ambitious task of exploring how access to them can be made easier (or available) for various stakeholders. From a health perspective, articles consider topics such as the role of patients and caregivers in ‘regulating’ access to voluntary assisted dying; the legal issues surrounding gender-affirming medical treatment for transgender and gender diverse minors; and how mental wellbeing can, and should, be prioritised in the law school curriculum.

Shifting to law and justice, the Issue explores and critically analyses the newly in-force New South Wales coercive control legislation; the High Court’s inconsistent approach to the admissibility of evidence in criminal cases; and alternative pathways available to convicted persons to challenge their conviction or sentence. Issue 47(3) also engages with questions of access to justice for rodeo horses, and considers issues concerning the use of third party litigation funding; expanding the boundaries of tort law; and the permissibility of citizenship deprivation under the Constitution.

The launch for Issue 47(3) will take place at 6pm on Wednesday 23 October 2024 at the Sydney office of Allens, with formal proceedings commencing at 6:30pm.
