About this Event
Let’s travel back through history to 1913 and Calgary’s “Age of Optimism” to tell the tale of a common culture facing change and how one architect’s vision foretold the future of a generation leading up to WW2. Find the clues as we stroll the streetscape of Kensington Road from Higher Ground to the red telephone box ending with a tour of Hillhurst United Church. Let’s have a conversation about this Arts & Crafts icon in Calgary’s original working class neighbourhood.
WALK NOTES: Busy sidewalks, breaks offered along the way, limited parking, there is a stair lift at Hillhurst United Church for those that can’t access the steps of the church.
MEETING SPOT: Meet outside Higher Ground Coffee, 1126 Kensington Rd N.W, at 1230pm. The walk and tour of Hillhurst United Church will take around 90 minutes from start to finish, at Hillhurst United Church.
YOUR WALK LEADER: Jim Stirling has an interest in architecture, history and community. Born and bred in Scotland, he has lived in the Hillhurst neighbourhood for over twenty years. With an eye for detail, he has a story to tell that links community and culture to the streets he’s walked most every day over that time.
***Please note, we ask that folks cancel their tickets through Eventbrite if they can no longer make it to a walk as tickets are limited. This allows folks on the waitlist to take open spots.***
